NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 11, 2013

“Sabattus Legion Hosts Blue Star Service Banner Ceremony”

SABBATTUS, ME – The Sabattus Harry J. Conway American Legion post recently conducted a Blue Star Service Banner presentation to seven local military families with members currently serving in the military.  The following families or representative of serving military members were recognized with a Certificate and Blue Star Banner:  Mrs. Katie Davis (1LT Adam Davis), Mrs. Tracey Rancourt (MSG James Rancourt), Miss Julie Rocray (SSG Woodbury Nickerson), Mrs. Mallory Hammond (SGT Cody Hammond), Mrs. Jamie Poulin (SGT Nicholas Poulin) and Mrs. Tiffany Libby (SGT Matthew Libby).  Also recognized, but unable to attend, were Mrs. Jess Jacobson (SGT Timothy Jacobson).

The assembled family and friend were invited to partake in some light refreshments at the conclusion of the ceremony.  Maine Senator Garrett Mason, was present at the event to recognize the contributions of the those in the military and their families.

The Blue Star Service Banner program is an annual event hosted by the Sabattus American Legion Post to recognize military members and their immediate family.

The Blue Star Service Banner was designed and patented in 1917 by World War I Army Capt. Robert L. Queissner of the 5th Ohio Infantry who had two sons serving on the front line.  It quickly became the unofficial symbol of a child in the service.

On September 24, 1917, an Ohio congressman read the following into the Congressional Record:  “…The mayor of Cleveland, the Chamber of Commerce and the governor of Ohio have adopted this service flag.  The world should know of those who give so much for liberty.  The dearest thing in all the world to a father and mother – their children.”

Blue Star Mothers and Gold Star Mothers organizations were established during World War I and remain active today.

During World War II, the Department of War issued specifications on manufacture of the flag, as well as guidelines indicating when the service flag could be flown and by whom.   The Blue Star Service Banner typically displayed in windows is an 8.5 by 14-inch white field with a blue star(s) sewn onto a red banner.

Today, families display these banners when they have a loved one serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The blue star represents one family member serving, and a banner can have up to five stars.  The banner displayed in the front window of a home shows a family’s pride in their loved one serving in the military, and reminds others that preserving America’s freedom demands much.

Blue Star Service Banners were widely used during both world wars, but were not embraced during the Korean or Vietnam wars with the same enthusiasm. The American Legion rekindled that spirit of pride in our military men and women following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by providing banners to military families across the nation.

If you would like to participate in this event in the future, please contact the Post Commander, Sabattus American Legion Post via their webpage at:  www.americanlegionpost135.sabattus.net, or by telephone at (207) 375-4058 (leave a message).  Application forms can also be downloaded at the website and sent in at any time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 7th, 2013

“Sabattus Legion Hosts 1960s Themed Cocktail Party”

The Sabattus American Legion Hall recently transported back into the early 1960s; a time of big hair, narrow ties, when all gentlemen wore hats.

The Sabattus American Legion Auxiliary hosted the event and a ticket and period clothing were a must to gain entrance. Over sixty locals turned out in their finest early 1960s attire. While period music played in the main hall and classic films played on the large flat screen television in the hall, young and old from Sabattus, and the surrounding areas, shared some camaraderie as they help raised funds for local post scholarships, veteran’s services and community events supported by the post.

Several organizations donated items for a raffle and silent auction to raise funds for legion activities that included: Campus Cutters, George O’Connel, The Sabattus Fire Association, The Sabattus Republican Town Committee, Jaci Peterson, and Flagship Cinemas.

Andre’ Marquis and his lovely wife Danielle were the host and hostess for the event which ran for several hours and included dancing to music from the early 1960s. Everyone agreed that it was an amazing event. This type of dance and social time will be a yearly event with a different theme planned for the coming years.

More photos of the event, and other post information, can be seen at the legion website “americanlegionpost135.sabattus.net” under “News, Photos and Videos.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 16, 2013

SABATTUS, ME - The American Legion Harry Conway Post 135 opened their June 16th meeting by bowing their heads and asking God to guide their work during the meeting and praying for the fellow comrades past and present.

The POW-MIA chair was prominently displayed at the front of the meeting room.  The empty chair honors those who are not present by reason of being missing since their time in war.

Students donate to Operation Comfort Warrior

(OCW)

Source:  Lewiston Sun Journal

SABATTUS — On Feb. 15, students at Oak Hill Middle School presented a check for $439.24 to members of the local American Legion.

Ron Caron presented seventh-grade teacher Aimee Lanteigne with a certificate from the American Legion National Headquarters for Oak Hill Middle School in recognition of its contribution to Operation Comfort Warrior.

Students in Ms. Lanteigne’s seventh grade advisory group initiated a coin drive for Operation Comfort Warrior throughout November and December. The students decorated and distributed empty yogurt containers to every classroom and then gathered them up and counted all the coins collected. It took nearly two weeks for students to count and recount all the loose change and then roll it into coin sleeves.

Operation Comfort Warrior is a program dedicated to raising money for wounded American warriors. The money is used to fund a variety of needs while these veterans are recovering in hospitals or convalescing back home. Items such as sweat suits and cotton socks to ease the pressure on burn wounds, iPods to help drown out tinnitus caused by damage to the eardrum after IED explosions, fitness equipment to help rebuild muscle strength or even gift cards to local stores and home improvement centers to help meet the needs of disabled veterans and their families are just some examples of how the money donated to Operation Comfort Warrior is used.

The presentation ceremony began with the OHMS Band under the direction of Mr. Fuller playing the national anthem. Students Jacob Kirchner, Lindsey Weeks, Drew Gordon, Tyler Desmarais and Chris Campbell made some brief remarks regarding the purpose of the assembly and how their advisory group went about collecting the money for Operation Comfort Warrior.

Lanteigne introduced seven distinguished guests from the local American Legion who attended the presentation ceremony. They included Ron Caron, veteran of the United States Marine Corps who served in Vietnam; Gordon Smith, Navy veteran who served in Korea; Dominic Santamango, Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam; Joseph Michaud, veteran of the United States Marine Corps who served in Panama; Jim Rancourt, active duty Army serviceman who has been in Iraq and who will be going to Afghanistan soon; Tracy Rancourt, who served in the Coast Guard and was stationed in Granada; and finally Joan Caron, auxiliary president of Post 135 in Sabattus.

After student Chris Campbell presented Ron Caron with the check, Caron addressed the student body. He recognized their efforts and sacrifice in raising money for such a worthy cause and shared some stories with them of how their coins will add up to make a big difference. Nationwide, Operation Comfort Warrior is closing in on nearly $500,000 raised thus far.

Caron presented a certificate and a minted coin to the school, which states “Thank you for your service.”

To make a donation or starting an OCW fundraiser at your school or work place, visit www.legion.org/ocw. Checks can be made out to Operation Comfort Warriors, The American Legion, P.O. Box 1055, Indianapolis, IN 46206.
